Fort Hunt Little League (FHLL) held its 62nd opening day ceremony at Carl Sandburg Middle School’s Red Stevens Field last month. The festivities featured Barry Meuse, FHLL president, and John Donaldson, District 9 Administrator, welcoming players, families and friends.
West Potomac Varsity Baseball players were introduced and their coaching staff spoke about the importance Little League play has in the development of future high school baseball players
Fort Hunt Little League Division Commissioners introduced their team managers and coaches, followed by players taking the field and high-fiving the West Potomac varsity players on their way around the bases
The national anthem was sung by West Potomac Junior Adrianna DeLorenzo.
Commemorative first pitches were thrown by a player from each of the Fort Hunt Little League’s Divisions as well by the West Potomac Varsity Team. Those players include:
T-Ball: Lexington “Lex” Cohoon
Single A: Mason LoCascio
AA: Crawford Baker
AAA: Daniel Taylor
Minors: Abby Beddis
Majors: Matthew Leonardo
West Potomac Varsity: Kurt Sullivan.
A representative from state Sen. Scott Surovell’s office was on-hand to present an official plaque of the State of Virginia Commending Resolution recognizing 2017 as the most successful season in the Fort Hunt Little League’s history with its 10Us, Majors, Intermediate and Seniors teams winning Virginia Little League District 9 Championships and with the Majors and Seniors teams both moving on to clinch the Virginia State Championship in their divisions.
Larry Gray accepted the FHLL Lifetime Sponsor Award on behalf of his local hardware store, Village Hardware. Village Hardware opened its doors in 1979 and sponsored Fort Hunt Little League that year and every year since with over $1,500 contributed each year.
“We were proud to kick off our 62 years of Fort Hunt Little League with our opening day ceremony and have been celebrating local baseball for boys and girls ever since,” said Barry Meuse, president, Fort Hunt Little League board of directors. “With almost 600 kids on 54 teams supported by more than 200 volunteers, this is what Little League is all about.”
