Mount Vernon: Fort Hunt’s Care and Share Meals hand-delivered before Jonas

With Winter Storm Jonas bearing down, volunteers from Fort Hunt Elementary School personally delivered weekend meals to families as part of the school’s Care and Share program.

Every weekend, Fort Hunt Elementary School’s Care and Share program typically provides three ready-made meals for each day away from school to more than 30 children in the school’s community. The food packs are distributed discreetly to students in need at school on Friday, before they leave for the weekend.

With Winter Storm Jonas bearing down at the end of last week, Fort Hunt staff volunteered to personally deliver the packs to the recipients, one day early.

“The ultimate goal is that Fort Hunt students can be successful at school,” said PTA President and Spanish teacher Allison Verich.

Because of the long weekend, the normal pack of two days’-worth of meals was bulked up to 12 total meals, Verich said. “They also delivered some winter clothing that we had accumulated: snow boots, snow pants and jackets.”

Now in its second year, Care and Share runs with partnerships and donations from Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Fort Hunt, St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Fort Hunt and Waynewood Elementary School, as well as help from Fort Hunt Elementary School counselors, school psychologists and PTA volunteers.
